Welcome to the Reception Class page!

We all know that going to ‘big school’ can sometimes be a daunting step for our children. At Wheatley Lane Primary we are very fortunate to have strong links with local early years settings. We also offer a tour of the school for parents and children during the summer term, this is a great way for children to families and staff to meet. During the first week of Reception, we offer a staggered start, beginning with a stay and play visit for parents and children. This makes the transition from Nursery into Reception Class as seamless as possible for our children.

We are a fortunate to have a very experienced Reception Team. Miss Jennings has worked in the EYFS for 15years.  She is ably supported by teaching assistants Mrs Korol and Miss Baker, who provide a caring and supportive environment for all our children.

Our classroom is set up to provide a multitude of early learning activities that are aimed to develop a knowledge and awareness of the world and build a framework of early maths and literacy skills. Our prime approach to developing early Reading and Writing skills is through phonics and we have a phonics session every day.  This is followed up enhanced provision in the Reading  and the Writing areas for children to learn independently.

The environment is organised into ‘areas of continuous provision’, which are enhanced every week to link with our themes. We follow themes half termly, and these are led by the children’s interest and also driven by the seasons and festivals.   We have full outdoor provision too and enjoy many of our activities out of doors – whatever the weather!

The children are at the heart of everything we do in Foundation Stage, but our relationships with parents are equally vital and we pride ourselves in making sure that parents are fully informed of everything that goes on in school.  We send out a weekly newsletter to explain the learning for the week and to celebrate individual achievement  and pass on important school notices. It is important at this stage that school and home become real partners in the learning process.
