Reception

Teaching children to read and ensuring they enjoy learning to read is a priority for us in Reception. Using a synthetic phonics scheme from very early in the year, the children soon learn that each letter/ pattern of letters represents a sound and that, when they blend these sounds together, they make a word. To see young children realise they they are actually reading is magic! The children have reading books to rehearse their skills at home (the MOST important thing a parent can do to support their child's reading along with reading to them).

We balance this phonetic approach by developing the children's comprehension through daily story time, units of work around books, books around the provision in class, role play, sharing children's favourite books and anything we can to develop an early love of reading. Please see the attached documents for more information.
